The emphasis in the 2014 Shimano WA Open is on tag and release. Cash prizes for those successful in catching and tagging billfish will encourage boats to fish with heavy tackle. The marlin fishery from the Abrolhos to Rottnest has shown very positive results so far this season with blue and striped marlin being caught.
The event forms round 6 of the City Beach Builders Championship Series. All eligible species tagged and released or weighed will earn points towards the City Beach Builders Grand Prix Series and towards the PGFC Annual Championship.
Seasport Charters has taken up the naming rights sponsorship for this year’s Marlin Cup. To be held early in the season it will encourage boats heading to Exmouth for Gamex in mid march to stop over and fish this 3 day comp.
Three days of exciting fishing will follow with the best 2 days counting for each boat and angler score.
It is a marlin tournament but in the absence of billfish, trophy points will be included for other species.
The inaugural Ivan Erceg Memorial Trophy awarded to the highest points scoring angler for marlin on day 1 will recognise the passion that the late Ivan had for fishing out of Jurien and the enthusiasm he engendered in the recent events held there.
In terms of value the entry fee includes 4 evening meals, team grab bag, crew shirts and other goodies. Juniors and ladies are encouraged to participate.
The Seasport Charters Marlin Cup is a WAGFA sanctioned tournament and a qualifying event for the 2015 Offshore World Championships.
The event forms Round 4 of the City Beach Builders Grand Prix Series and is co- sponsored by Nextside Concreting, Ivan Erceg’s company as well as Port Bouvard Pty Ltd.
Accommodation is readily available in the town at whatever standard is required. For those mooring boats at the marina, there should be no problems with pens that can be booked through Jurien Boatlifters.
Further details are available on the Marlin Cup event page.
