About Perth Game Fishing Club
Perth Game Fishing Club (PGFC) was formed in 1949 when it was known as the West Australian Game Fishing Association (WAGFA). In 1956 the club changed its name to PGFC and allow WAGFA to function as the peak state body representing game fishing. The club has a membership of approximately 210, including men, women and juniors. The club has a philosophy of fishing for the future and encourages the practice of tag and release.
The club year is from 1st October to 30th September for scoring and administrative purposes. The season Open Day gets underway with a sail past and shotgun start on the first weekend of February from Thomson Bay – Rottnest Island. Members enjoy getting out and chasing game fish which is then followed by fellowship on the Rottnest fuel jetty and a relaxing dinner on the island.
PGFC holds two major tournaments throughout the year. The WA Open is held in April and the Marlin Cup in May. Firm dates are displayed in our events section of the website. The club also hosts informal club days throughout the season focussed on species or member groups – Tuna Comp, Samson Comp, Ladies and Small Fry Day and the Marlin Cup. These are also noted on the website. Members are encouraged to participate in competitions held by other clubs around the state and sometimes also internationally.
Those members who do not have their own boats can usually fish on another club member’s boat as crew. Likewise, inexperienced new members with boats are encouraged in learning the ropes by having a knowledgeable crew member made available to them. Crew members can be matched with skippers.
The main social activity aside from tournaments are social nights held on the first Tuesday of each month for a majority of the months during the season. These popular gatherings are held at our Clubrooms situated at the Fremantle Annex of Royal Perth Yacht Club at Mews Road, Fishing Boat Harbour Fremantle. At these meetings snacks are provided and the bar is open. The social nights allow anglers to discuss coming events, look at some tackle techniques and generally “chit chat”. We often have guest speakers on related topics. The social nights dates are displayed on the website with details of the speaker or presentations that will be on for the evening. Non-members are encouraged to Come down and meet the club and join up on the night.
Members stay up to date of what is happening in the local game-fishing scene with frequent Hook-Up e-mail newsletters sent out throughout the year. The annual Strike magazine with comprehensive information on the Club’s activities and results is published in September..
PGFC is also responsible for running the metropolitan area’s FAD program, which sees six FADs positioned well offshore attracting game fish species including tuna, mahi mahi and marlin.
Please feel free to attend one of our meetings to get a feel for what we do. If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact the Club’s President, Johnno Wroth on mobile 0417960088, or any of the committee members listed on the website.
