PGFC Rottnest FAD Program

PGFC initiated the Rottnest Island recoverable FAD program in 1997, some 15 years after early non-recoverable FADs were positioned in company with Fremantle Sailing Club’s game fishing group. These FADs were designed to be recoverable in order to avoid winter storms and wear on components which were considered responsible for losses in early years. WA Fisheries assisted with funding the initial program.

How it works

FADs Care and Maintenance

Since the first time instalment with the assistance of naming rights sponsors and Recfishwest it has been successfully funded.

Six FADs

The six FADs are positioned west of Rottnest in early November. Every season some may be lost through damage by ships, weather, or undetermined reasons. The remaining FADs are recovered in early May and taken ashore for refurbishment. All the assembly and maintenance work is carried out by PGFC member volunteers.

Sponsors

Our current FAD sponsors, after whom the FADs are named, are Club Marine, Compleat Angler, Fibrelite Boats, Fremantle Sailing Club, Furuno and Perth Game Fishing Club .

Benefits for Everyone

The FADs attract gamefish species including tuna, yellowtail kingfish, mahi mahi, wahoo and marlin, creating a major game fishing experience that otherwise would not exist. Estimates of activity during the 2021-2022 season are of close to 5000 angler visits to the FADs.

PGFC’s Expertise

Our  experience with design and construction of FAD floats and moorings is recognised by Recfishwest in its statewide FAD program which includes the use of 22 PGFC designed units.
